Meet Our Intern Joran De Decker
Meet Joran, born and raised in Belgium: from dead-end diagrams to a documentation feature he’s proud of
Some of the best internship stories start with a problem that refuses to cooperate. For Joran, that problem was getting WaveDrom diagrams to style themselves correctly inside Sigasi’s generated documentation.
“The dynamic styling of the WaveDrom diagrams needed some trial and error, because some paths were dead ends,” Joran says. “In the end, I’m very proud of my solution.”
That solution — and the winding path to it — is a good summary of what his internship at Sigasi has looked like.
Meet Joran
Joran De Decker is studying for a Master of Science in Electronics and ICT Engineering Technology at UGent . Outside his studies, you’ll find him playing sports, out with friends, or traveling.
His path into technology started small and organically: “It grew from an interest in how things work — starting with editing the source code of websites, writing my first program, and then expanding my knowledge by choosing STEM topics at school and university.”
He chose Sigasi for his internship because he was looking for a place to prepare for his future field of work. “Sigasi seemed like an interesting company that was also well located,” he says.
One thing his colleagues probably don’t know about him: he can juggle five balls!
The project
Joran’s project was WaveDrom Documentation Generation — teaching Sigasi’s documentation output to render clear, correctly styled timing diagrams automatically. “I have the advantage that my project is very visual,” he says.
When asked how he’d explain it to someone outside engineering. “I would probably just show an example.”
The assignment started broad — “implementation of WaveDrom” — which turned out to be an advantage. “I had the chance to share my thoughts on what would be good features to implement,” Joran explains. “After setting out the goals, I again got a lot of freedom in how I wanted to approach them.”
That freedom is what led to the dead ends, and eventually to the solution he’s proudest of: getting the diagrams’ dynamic styling to actually work.
Beyond the diagrams themselves, Joran picked up something that doesn’t come from a lecture hall: “How teams handle big codebases, and the advanced use of git for that.”
The experience
Ask Joran to describe the atmosphere at Sigasi and he doesn’t hesitate: “Very pleasant and amicable. There’s a lot of room for fun, which allows you to focus very well the rest of the time.”
He credits Felix with getting him started. “Felix helped me get started and was the first one I directed my questions to. As time progressed, I learned that every developer has a thing they know most about — so now I ask a different person depending on the topic.”
A typical day, in his words: “standup, then fresh roasted coffee. Check on any pipelines started the day before, pick up where he left off, and dig back in. On Tuesday and Thursday a run at noon with the team, lunch with colleagues, more work in the afternoon, often with a drink and a snack somewhere in there - once a week homemade cake -, and wrapping up before shutting down for the day.”
Asked what he likes most about working at Sigasi, his answer is short and to the point: “The atmosphere, and running with the team.”
The personal side
- Skill improved the most: reading code — diagonally, as he puts it
- Most-used app: Spotify
- Dream job at age ten: pilot
- Has the internship changed how he thinks about his career? “Yes — it probably added a software job to the list of possibilities.”
